The 2022 Tony Awards

Hello! With the Tony Awards being Sunday, I wanted to write this post today. I will discuss my picks for the musical categories. All information comes from-here.

Best Book of a Musical

MJ

Lynn Nottage

I’m honestly not sure why I think MJ will win best book of a musical,  I think because it’s a story that people know, and Tony voters enjoy things that they have some background for. NJ tells the story of Michael Jackson getting ready for a concert.

Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre

SIX: The Musical

Music and Lyrics: Toby Marlow & Lucy Moss

I love  Six the Musical, and definitely think that they can take home Best Original Score. The mixture of pop and R&B is fantastic, and I believe that audiences and Tony voters alike agree. Six tells the story of the Ex Wives of Henry the 8th telling their story, and forming a pop girl group.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical

Hugh Jackman, The Music Man

Judging from the B-Roll footage released, Hugh is doing a fantastic job as Harold Hill in The Music Man. He’s also a a person that has a tony, so the tony voters have enjoyed his performances in the past.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical

Sharon D Clarke, Caroline, or Change

Sutton Foster, The Music Man

I know I put two people for this category. I would love to see the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress go to Sharon or Sutton. Judging from B-Roll footage, both of  these performers gave, and is giving, a  tony winning performances as  Caroline in Caroline or Change, and Marion Paroo in The Music Man.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical

Matt Doyle, Company
Matt Doyle is having quite an award season filled with wins. Looking at years past, if an actor has won a previous award that season, such as the Drama Desk, they could win the Tony. I’m hoping Matt wins because of his performance as Jamie in Company.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical

Shoshana Bean, Mr. Saturday Night
Patti LuPone, Company

This is another two actresses  I know. I sometimes have a hard time deciding between two actresses.  I would love to see Shoshana Bean be the underdog, and take home the win, but I have a feeling it will go to Patti LuPone. Like Matt, Patti LuPone is having a fantastic award winning season, so I believe she will win the tony as well.

Best Scenic Design of a Musical

Bunny Christie, Company

The sets of Company are fantastic, and I believe they will win the production the tony.

Best Costume Design of a Musical

Gabriella Slade, SIX: The Musical
I’m not sure Six will win the tony, but I really enjoy, and I want to see the costumes take home a win.

Best Lighting Design of a Musical

Tim Deiling, SIX: The Musical

The lighting for Six is so much fun, and I would love to see them take home the award for best lighting.

Best Sound Design of a Musical

Ian Dickinson for Autograph, Company

Company is another show I really enjoy,, and I want to see them tot the best sound Tony home.

Best Direction of a Musical

Marianne Elliott, Company

Lucy Moss & Jamie Armitage, SIX: The Musical

I can’t pick between Company and Six for best direction. I think they both have the things that make them fantastic, so I’m happy with either one taking home the tony.

Best Choreography

Warren Carlyle, The Music Man

While Six does have amazing choreography, I think The Music Man will take this one.

Best Orchestrations

David Cullen, Company
As much as I love the music and orchestrions of Six, you really can’t beat a Stephen Sondheim musical in terms of orchestrations, which gives Company the edge in my opinion.

Best Musical

SIX: The Musical

Producers: Kenny Wax, Wendy & Andy Barnes, George Stiles, Kevin McCollum, Chicago Shakespeare Theater

Of all the nominees, I would love to see Six take home Best Musical. I’m not sure how the Tony voters will feel, as Six is the style of a show that isn’t for everyone, but I would love to see them take this win.

Caroline, or Change
